New Mercies for the New Routine

Hey there, Mama,

We're a few weeks into the school year now, and if your house is anything like mine, the frantic scramble of those first days has settled into... something. LOL!

I'm on my last round of seeing a child through high school, and you'd think I'd be a pro after raising my older two — but for some reason, I feel exhausted. And honestly, it's not even that chaotic. My daughter is pretty independent. When she's done getting ready, she knocks on my bedroom door to let me know she's ready (she does this even earlier than she needs to, because she knows her mom. LOL!). But for some reason, I feel more exhausted now than I did all summer. Maybe it's the mental shift of adjusting to a new routine. The mental energy it takes is just as real as the physical preparation.

So, to keep myself from stretching too thin or operating under rigid self-expectations, I've chosen to move with ease. To accept the new season and honor the capacity I actually have for the responsibilities in front of me.

If I don't have the capacity to get my workout clothes on before taking my daughter to school... I don't.

If I don't have the capacity to wake up extra early for my devotional time like I could in the summer, I don't. I show myself grace and do it after I drop her off — and sometimes that happens in the car, after I've pulled back into my driveway.

If I don't have the capacity to cook a full meal after a long day of chauffeuring, working, serving, and picking up, I don't.

If I need to sleep in some days, I do.

Now don't get me wrong — I'm not promoting laziness, but grace. Grace to take the time I need to adjust. Because although it feels strange to be this exhausted over what seems like a small shift, it is a shift. And who am I to place unrealistic expectations on myself?

Devotion: New Mercies for the New Routine

Scripture

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."

I love that this promise isn't about the big miracles — it's about mornings. Ordinary, repeating, sometimes-messy mornings. The kind where devotional time happens in the car instead of at your kitchen table. The kind where dinner is cereal instead of the meal you planned. The kind where you're still figuring out what "normal" even looks like this season.

Here's what strikes me: God's mercy isn't waiting for you to get it together first. It's not reserved for the mornings you nailed the routine. It's new, fresh, unearned, freely given, for the mornings you didn't have the capacity to do it "right".

Sometimes we treat mercy like a reward for consistency. Like grace is for the days we showed up early and did the workout and had the quiet time on the porch with coffee. But that's not what Lamentations says. His mercies are new every morning — not just the smooth ones.

So if this season has you moving devotional time to the car, or skipping the workout clothes, or crawling into bed earlier than you'd like, that's not you failing to adjust. That's you being honest about your actual capacity, and trusting that God's mercy meets you there too, not just on the other side of a routine that finally clicks.

Adjustment isn't supposed to be instant. Give yourself the same grace God gives you fresh, every single morning.

Take a Moment to Reflect

Take a moment to reflect:

-Where have I been treating grace like something I have to earn through consistency, instead of something freely given each morning?

-What would it look like to honor my actual capacity this week, instead of the capacity I had over the summer — or the capacity I think I "should" have?

-Is there one place I'm being rigid with myself that I could soften with grace instead?

Pray: Father, thank you for your mercy that is new every morning. Help me to receive it as another chance to grow and do better. Not an opportunity to slack nor condemn myself. In Jesus name. Amen.

Just Because You Can Handle It Doesn't Mean You Have the Capacity For It

Can you take on one more thing? Probably. But capability and capacity aren't the same. In this blog I help you with the question to ask before your next automatic yes.

Mom Tips: Adjusting to New Routines with Grace & Mercy

  • Prep the night before, not the morning of. Even just laying out clothes and packing bags the night before takes so much pressure off those first bleary-eyed minutes.
  • Pick one "anchor" moment for connection. Whether it's the car ride, bedtime, or dinner — choose one small window each day where you're fully present with your kids, even if everything else is rushed.
  • Let go of the days that don't go as planned. Some mornings will fall apart no matter how prepped you are. Mercy is new tomorrow.
  • Give yourself permission to rest without needing to justify it. Rest is not earned. It's necessary.

Faith-Filled Affirmation For the Week

"I don't have to be consistent to be covered in grace. God's mercy meets me fresh every morning — even the mornings I'm still figuring it out."

Closing Encouragement

Mama, if this season has you more tired than you expected, you're not doing it wrong. You're adjusting. And adjustment takes real energy, even when the shift looks small from the outside.

Give yourself the grace to move with ease. Skip the workout clothes if you need to. Let the devotional time happen in the car. Rest when you need to rest. His mercy isn't waiting for you to have it all figured out. It's already here, new, this morning, exactly as you are.

With love and encouragement,
Karen 🤎

Hey there, Mama, Oh my goodness — it's August! Or shall I say halfway through August 😵💫 For many of us, this season means one thing: back to school. Whether you're sending your little one to kindergarten, dropping a teenager off for their first day of high school, or making that emotional drive to a college campus — this time of year is bittersweet. There's the excitement of getting your house back (and maybe — just maybe — a lower grocery bill). But then come those mommy emotions that sneak...

Hey there, Mama, I remember years ago sitting in a classroom with one of my colleagues. We were both young wives, learning how to navigate our faith and marriage. Like many newly married women, we had begun sharing some of our frustrations and the adjustments that come with becoming a wife. At one point during our conversation, she leaned over and whispered something she had been struggling with—one of those thoughts you don't really want to admit out loud. I leaned in so I could hear her...

Hey there, Mama, The other day, I was driving my teenage daughter to her strength and conditioning camp. She's naturally athletic and has been blessed with talent. But like many of us, the work it takes to move from good to great isn't always something she looks forward to. On the drive there, she looked over at me and said she really didn't feel like going. I smiled because... honestly, I get it. I told her, "You know, I don't really like exercising either. In fact, I rarely feel like doing...
