Hey there, Mama,
Back in May, I made a decision that wasn't easy. I knew the season ahead was going to be full. Between family events, graduations, ministry responsibilities, my counseling practice, and simply life, I could already feel my capacity beginning to fill up.
So I did something that felt uncomfortable. I took a step back.
I temporarily stepped away from a few ministry responsibilities. There were moments when I had to say no. Moments when I had to allow other people to step up and do things I would normally do. There were even times when I chose not to do something with the same level of volume that I usually would.
If I'm honest, that wasn't easy for me. But it was necessary. And it was wise. Because I've learned something over the years:
The God we serve is far more important than the service we provide.
Sometimes, saying no to a responsibility is actually saying yes to God's wisdom.
Devotion: You Cannot Pour From an Empty Cup
Scripture:
"What you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone."
One of my favorite leadership moments in Scripture is when Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, quietly observed him. Moses spent sunrise to sunset ministering to the people.
Every problem.
Every conflict.
Every decision.
Everyone came to Moses.
At first glance, it looked admirable. He was serving God's people. He was helping everyone, and was being faithful. But Jethro saw something Moses couldn't. He saw exhaustion. He saw burnout coming before Moses did. And in love, he spoke truth.
"What you're doing is not good."
Notice he didn't say Moses' heart wasn't good. He didn't say serving was wrong. He simply said the way Moses was doing it wasn't sustainable.
Then Jethro gave Moses wisdom. Find capable people and delegate. Share the responsibility. Not because the work wasn't important...
But because Moses was important too.
Mama... isn't that where so many of us find ourselves? Trying to carry every responsibility, solve every problem, and be everything to everyone. Whether it's motherhood, work, ministry, marriage, friendships, or volunteering...Eventually, if we never step back, we'll wear ourselves out.
God never intended for us to carry what only He can carry. Sometimes wisdom sounds like:
"I need help."
"I can't do that this season."
"Someone else can lead."
And that's okay.
Because obedience isn't measured by how much we do.
It's measured by our willingness to follow God's direction. Even when it means stepping back.
Take a Moment to Reflect
Take a moment to reflect:
- Where am I carrying responsibilities that God never asked me to carry?
- Have I confused being needed with being called?
- What is one thing I need to release or delegate in this season?
Pray: Lord, thank you that my acceptance as your child isn't base on how much I do. Help me to step back when needed, so other's can step up and serve, too.

Why Overgiving Leads to Resentment: When Serving Others Starts to Cost You
In this blog, I share a personal lesson God taught me about the difference between pouring out and being poured into—and why taking a "Selah" may be exactly what your heart needs.

Mom Tips: Protecting Your Capacity
🤎 Remember that saying no to one thing often allows you to say yes to what matters most.
🤎Don't wait until you're overwhelmed to ask for help.
🤎Give others the opportunity to grow by allowing them to serve alongside you.
🤎 Protect your relationship with God before protecting your schedule.
Faith-Filled Affirmation For the Week
"I am a faithful steward of the life God has entrusted to me. I release the pressure to do everything and trust that God can accomplish His purposes through many hands—not just mine.
Closing Encouragement
Mama, one of the greatest lessons I've learned is that wisdom often looks different than we expect.
Sometimes wisdom is serving.
Sometimes wisdom is leading.
And sometimes...
Wisdom is stepping back.
Not because you've given up. Not because you love God any less. But because you're choosing to honor Him with your capacity.
May you remember this week that the God you serve loves you far more than the work you do for Him. His desire has never been for you to burn out trying to build His Kingdom. His desire is that you walk with Him as He builds it through you.
With love and grace,
Karen 🤎
